A Nigerian cleric, Bisi Adewale, has sparked online discussion after sharing his perspective on the chief responsibility of a husband in marriage.
In a widely shared video on social platforms, he explained that a man’s main obligation in matrimony is neither to provide financially nor to express affection toward his spouse.
Rather, he asserted that the foremost duty is to act as the family’s spiritual guide.
Marriage Starts with Spiritual Leadership, According to the Pastor
Adewale observes that numerous husbands concentrate on earning income and showing affection to their wives while overlooking their personal walk with God.
“The first duty of a man in marriage is not to provide. The first duty of a man in marriage is not to love his wife,” he remarked.
He emphasized that a husband must first become “the priest of the household,” explaining that authentic love for a partner can only emanate from a deep connection with the Divine.
Caution Against Self‑Centred Love
The pastor warned that loving one’s wife without first loving God can lead to a selfish, self‑focused attitude in marriage.
“If you love your wife without loving God, you will soon become harsh toward her, for you will not know how to love her properly,” he stated.
He added that such affection may turn demanding and self‑serving, possibly causing emotional pain within the union.
Prioritize God First
Citing Scripture, Adewale urged married men and those preparing for marriage to place their spiritual lives at the forefront.
“Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all else will be given to you,” he declared.
He closed by describing marriage as one of the blessings that follow a God‑centered life, saying, “Marriage is among the things added.”
