Osun Governor Adeleke Accuses EFCC of Planning to Freeze State Accounts Before Election
Governor Ademola Adeleke has accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of planning to freeze all bank accounts belonging to the Osun State government ahead of the August 15 governorship election, describing the alleged move as unlawful and capable of crippling government operations just days before voters go to the polls.
He raised the alarm during a meeting held at the Government House in Osogbo on Tuesday, according to a statement from his office.
The statement quoted Adeleke saying the alleged plan also targets the accounts of top government officials and would amount to “the height of lawlessness.”
Adeleke insisted there is no legal basis for such action, asserting that the anti‑graft agency lacks the authority to freeze a state government’s accounts.
He claimed the motive is to disrupt his administration’s activities before the vote, adding that the plot aims to paralyze government functions.
Attempts to obtain a comment from the EFCC were unsuccessful; spokesperson Dele Oyewale said he would respond later but had not done so by the time the report was filed.
Adeleke is seeking a second term under the Accord Party banner, while the All Progressives Congress is working to regain control of Osun after four years in opposition.
The pre‑election period has seen heightened political tension, with reports of violent clashes between supporters of the two major camps in various localities across the state.
Earlier in the week, while campaigning in Olorunda Local Government Area, Adeleke appealed to President Bola Tinubu to intervene and curb the escalating violence, warning against a repeat of the 1983 South‑West political crisis.
He also noted that the Accord Party’s endorsement of Tinubu’s re‑election bid should motivate the federal government to guarantee peace in the state, urging urgent action to protect residents and ensure a free and fair election.
