Lukman Warns Against Opposition Fragmentation
A senior member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Salihu Moh Lukman, has raised the alarm that ongoing disagreements and personal ambitions among Nigeria’s opposition leaders could pave the way for President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) to secure another victory in the 2027 general election.
Speaking in Abuja on Thursday, Lukman noted that despite widespread discontent with the APC‑led administration, opposition parties appear to be repeating the strategic errors that weakened them in past polls. He singled out former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, ex‑Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi as prominent figures whose individual presidential aspirations risk splitting the opposition vote.
“The lack of unity among the opposition was largely responsible for the APC’s electoral success,” Lukman stated. “If their true goal is to defeat President Tinubu and the APC, why do they fail to see that division hands the victory to the ruling party on a silver platter?”
He accused opposition politicians of prioritising personal political gain over building a credible alternative, arguing that the differences between the leading contenders are largely superficial. Lukman added that, without a disciplined and united platform that places collective interest above individual ambition, Nigerians may face a 2027 ballot that offers little real choice.
