Obasanjo Sons Back APC Candidate for Ogun 2027 Governor Race
Two sons of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Olugbenga and Olujuwon, have publicly endorsed Senator Solomon Adeola (popularly known as Yayi), the APC governorship candidate for Ogun State in the 2027 election.
Adeola announced the visit on his verified Facebook page, saying he was honoured to receive the brothers at his Abeokuta residence and praised their support for his governance record and gubernatorial ambition.
The endorsement comes weeks after Adeola secured the APC ticket, positioning him as the party’s preferred successor to incumbent Governor Dapo Abiodun.
However, the brothers’ support contrasts sharply with the stance of their sister, former Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, who had also sought the APC nomination.
Iyabo criticised the selection process, claiming it violated party guidelines and that she was sidelined despite a prior consensus agreement.
On June 8, she resigned from the APC, citing persistent disrespect and unfair treatment by the party leadership.
Reports later indicated that she had concluded plans to rejoin the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where she previously built much of her political career, and has endorsed the PDP’s gubernatorial candidate, Ladi Adebutu.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo himself has not publicly endorsed Adeola’s bid, and his sons’ statements do not necessarily reflect his position.
The elder Obasanjo has historically kept a distance from the APC and rarely backs ruling‑party candidates during elections.
Earlier in the week, Obasanjo visited Kano and met with Rabiu Kwankwaso, the vice‑presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), fuelling further speculation about his political alignments ahead of the 2027 polls.
Senator Solomon Adeola currently represents Ogun West in the Senate and previously served Lagos West from 2015 to 2023 after a stint in the House of Representatives.
