Introduction
A member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) voices concern about the steep rise in living expenses in Abuja, especially the surge in food prices.
Rising Food Prices
In a clip circulating online, the corps member lamented that a mere five tomatoes cost five hundred naira at a nearby market.
Impact on Allowance
The corps member said the encounter left them stunned and barely able to manage everyday costs.
The frustrated corps member noted that the monthly allowance, commonly called allawee, is devoured almost wholly by food expenses, leaving barely anything for other necessities.
According to the corps member, undertaking service in Abuja has turned into a financial strain because of the steep prices of essential goods.
Personal Reaction
She continued, saying:
“Guys what exactly is happening in Abuja that I don’t know?! I’m just coming back from the market where I went to get stuff to cook. Guys tomatoes 500 was just 5 pieces. Does it mean that each tomato is 100 Naira? You guys are not making life easy for Corpers in Abuja. My only mistake was to come and serve in Abuja. I don’t even have any savings anymore. All my allawee has finished on food and I have to eat of course, I’m tired I wan go back village….”
