A man recently went viral after he jokingly told a new acquaintance that he is heterosexual, following weeks of unexpected generosity that made him suspect a hidden agenda.
He said they first met at a local football field about a month ago and quickly realized they lived in the same neighbourhood.
Since that meeting, the friend has been giving him rides to games on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings, covering both their match fees and buying water after each match.
Their bond strengthened when they unexpectedly encountered each other at the same church.
The friend also reached out after seeing a social media post about the man’s flooded home, helped him and his brother clean up, and later returned with a bucket of KFC and drinks so they could watch Club World Cup matches together.
New friend’s explanation ends the misunderstanding
The latest gesture came after a football match when the friend stopped at a boutique to pick up an order and insisted the man choose a pair of trousers, which he paid for.
The man remarked, “Bro, I like women o. Just in case all this kindness is because of one thing. Abeg, I’m straight as a ruler, I no dey do man.”
He added that the comment made both of them laugh before his friend explained that he had only moved to Lagos in April, had not yet made many friends, and that the man was the first Igbo person he had become close to in the city.
Story sparks reactions online
After telling his brothers about the incident, they laughed at him for the remark.
Nevertheless, he pointed out that life in Lagos can make people question the motives behind unexpected generosity from strangers.
The story has triggered discussion on social media, with many Nigerians affirming that authentic friendships still exist, while others said they understood why he felt the need to clarify his stance before the relationship could be misinterpreted.
