A man has publicly criticized a Canada-based Nigerian woman after she compelled her husband to swear on camera that he would remain faithful if he moved abroad to join her.
The woman, identified as Ezinne Maryjane Nwanorue, attracted widespread attention after posting a clip of her spouse pledging loyalty should he relocate to Canada.
The footage, together with her explanations for the pledge, generated a range of reactions across social media.
Man Challenges the Public Oath
Responding to the video, the man argued that forcing the husband to record and broadcast the promise constituted an unnecessary embarrassment.
In a Facebook post, he likened the scenario to situations where partners move overseas first and later sponsor their spouses and children to join them.
He wrote:
He explained that it is common for a husband to relocate first, secure housing and employment, then bring his wife and children overseas; while many couples thrive afterward, some relationships deteriorate, leading to conflict or separation.
He noted the opposite trend where the wife establishes herself abroad without plans to bring her husband, and when he requests to join her she imposes a degrading public pledge, requiring him to swear on video that infidelity will result in his death.
Husband’s Vow Sparks Debate
The man acknowledged that the husband complied and made the vow, but questioned the necessity of making it public.
He said the man recorded the video and made all the promises, yet the wife disseminated it widely; any reasonable man with self‑respect would reject such treatment, asking “What sort of public humiliation is that?”
