Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi and former Osun State Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola paid a visit to former President Olusegun Obasanjo at his residence in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Sunday.
Makinde shared the news on his Facebook page, explaining that the discussion centred on important national issues in view of the upcoming general election.
“Earlier today, we visited Baba, His Excellency Chief Olusegun Obasanjo GCFR in Abeokuta,” Makinde wrote. He added that the trio appreciated the former president’s wise counsel at this crucial moment in the nation’s history.
While the specifics of the conversation were not disclosed, the gathering of these three prominent political figures has intensified speculation about potential new alliances ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Makinde’s Presidential Ambition
In May, Makinde formally declared his intention to run for president as he nears the end of his second term as Oyo State governor. He emerged as the presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) after announcing his ambition during a joint mega rally with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ibadan.
He asserted that “the time to reset Nigeria is now,” arguing that the country’s condition has continued to deteriorate, leaving many citizens struggling to survive. Makinde also accused public officials entrusted with citizens’ welfare of abandoning their duties.
Potential 2027 Contenders
Should he proceed, Makinde would face several leading political figures in the 2027 election, including:
- President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), seeking a second term.
- Former Vice‑President Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
- Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
The Abeokuta meeting has drawn particular attention because Oyinlola remains a chieftain of the PDP, while Fayemi is a member of the APC, suggesting possible cross‑party dialogue.
Obasanjo’s Political Role
Former President Obasanjo has not yet publicly declared which candidate he will support in the 2027 race, though he has been widely linked to Peter Obi’s presidential ambition without issuing a formal endorsement.
Obasanjo has also been at the centre of renewed political controversy after alleging that Atiku Abubakar gave the late former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ghali Umar Na’Abba, ₦5 million to initiate impeachment proceedings against him during his first term. Atiku rejected the claim, accusing Obasanjo of attempting to rewrite history and weaken opposition figures ahead of the 2027 election.
