Lukman Warns Opposition Division Could Hand Tinubu a 2027 Victory
A senior member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Salihu Moh Lukman, has cautioned that ongoing splits and personal ambitions among opposition leaders may pave the way for President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) to secure another term in the 2027 general election.
Speaking in Abuja on Thursday, Lukman noted that despite widespread discontent with the APC‑led government, opposition parties seem to be repeating the errors that weakened their prospects in earlier polls.
The former APC National Vice Chairman (North‑West) singled out former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, ex‑Kano Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi as key opposition figures whose individual presidential aspirations could fragment the effort to unseat the ruling party.
“Lack of unity among the opposition was largely responsible for the APC’s electoral victory. The same pattern is re‑emerging, with the same two leading opposition figures positioning themselves as challengers to President Tinubu,” Lukman said.
He questioned why, if the goal is truly to defeat the APC and Tinubu, the leaders cannot see that division hands victory to the incumbent.
Lukman added that many Nigerians are growing disillusioned with opposition politicians who prioritize personal ambition over building a credible alternative.
He argued that, beyond superficial differences and the personalities contesting the 2027 race, there is little that distinguishes the candidates.
While acknowledging the nation’s economic challenges, Lukman stressed that the opposition has yet to present a convincing alternative capable of inspiring public confidence.
According to him, defeating the APC will require a disciplined, united platform that places collective interest above individual ambitions.
“With each day of inaction and the repetition of old tactics, the 2027 election is beginning to look like a choice between the devil and the deep blue sea for Nigerians,” he warned.
