Lawyer Calls for Tinubu’s Resignation Over Missing Certificates
A lawyer and member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Kalu Kalu, has urged President Bola Tinubu to step down amid renewed claims about his educational background.
Kalu asserted that the debate has moved beyond simple allegations, stating that Tinubu lacks both a primary and a secondary school certificate.
He argued that the controversy could be settled if the President released the disputed documents to the public.
“If he says it’s an allegation, if he says it’s an accusation, let him come out and tell Nigerians, ‘This is my primary school certificate. This is my secondary school certificate.’ This matter will stop,” Kalu said.
The lawyer added that a clear disclosure would end speculation and allow citizens to verify Tinubu’s academic history.
Nomination papers submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of the 2027 election list a university degree but leave the primary and secondary school sections blank.
Opposition figures have criticised the omission, while Tinubu’s supporters contend that his declared university qualification satisfies the constitutional minimum.
Kalu traced the issue back to 1999, when late human rights lawyer Gani Fawehinmi first questioned Tinubu’s school records, a matter that reached the Supreme Court but was dismissed on technical grounds.
The dispute resurfaced during the 2023 presidential election and flared again after INEC published candidates’ details for the 2027 poll.
He asked, “Is it not high time Mr President came up and let Nigerians know, ‘This is who I am. This is my primary school certificate. This is my secondary school certificate’? We settle this issue once and for all.”
Kalu warned that the ongoing controversy harms the presidency and the nation’s political system, and therefore called on Tinubu to resign if he cannot provide the requested documents.
“This is the time Bola Ahmed Tinubu should resign and leave office, for crying out loud,” he declared, questioning why the issue keeps resurfacing.
