Kwara PDP Unveils Kawu and Fawenu for 2027 Governorship Race
The Kwara State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) announced on Friday that retired civil servant Bolakale Kawu will be its governorship candidate for the 2027 election. The party also introduced Pastor Cornelius Fawenu of Oasis of Wisdom Bible Church in Ilorin as Kawu’s running mate.
The unveiling took place at the party’s state secretariat in Ilorin, attended by leaders, stakeholders, members and supporters from across Kwara.
PDP Chairman Isa Adamu said the announcement marks a major step in the party’s preparation for the 2027 governorship contest. He explained that Kawu selected Fawenu after broad consultations with party leaders and stakeholders statewide.
Adamu added that Fawenu emerged from a rigorous selection process involving four qualified nominees, embodying the party’s values of competence, integrity and selfless service.
He praised Fawenu for withdrawing from the Kwara South senatorial ticket to support the party’s interest, describing the move as a display of loyalty, discipline and selfless leadership.
Adamu noted that the party has started the constitutional process of informing its national leadership about the vacancy created by Fawenu’s senatorial withdrawal, and affirmed the PDP’s readiness to deliver purposeful leadership focused on security, economic growth, quality education, youth and women empowerment, agriculture and transparent governance.
In his acceptance speech, Pastor Fawenu thanked God and the PDP leadership for the trust placed in him, and expressed gratitude to party leader Bukola Saraki, candidate Kawu, the state chairman, the State Working Committee, the Council of Elders and members across the state.
Representing the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Kwara State, Bishop STG Adewole’s delegate, Rev. Yemi Adepoju, urged politicians and residents to maintain peace and unity ahead of the election, calling for issue‑based campaigns that prioritize the state’s welfare over personal or partisan interests.
