Kiddwaya Reveals Father’s Role in Nigeria’s Democracy
Nigerian reality TV star Kiddwaya recently disclosed that his father played a quiet but significant part in shaping the country’s democratic system.
According to Kiddwaya, his father rarely speaks about his accomplishments unless asked, preferring to let his actions speak for themselves.
He said he only learned about his father’s involvement with Banana Island after hearing the story on a BBC interview, describing the enclave as Africa’s most expensive and luxurious piece of land.
The most surprising revelation, however, came when Kiddwaya recalled a conversation his father had with a close friend of former military ruler Sani Abacha.
After Abacha’s death, the friend assumed the presidency and visited the family home, unsure of how to govern. Kiddwaya’s father advised him to hand power over to the people by establishing a democratic system.
“He told his friend, ‘Give it to democracy so the people can vote,’” Kiddwaya recounted, adding that his father never sought public recognition for his role.
Kiddwaya believes this behind‑the‑scenes guidance helped steer Nigeria away from military rule and toward the democratic process the nation practices today.
