Kenneth Okonkwo Criticises APC Over Abia Campaign Billboard Fees
A prominent member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Kenneth Okonkwo, has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of exploiting Abia State Governor Alex Otti to suppress opposition voices through excessively high campaign billboard charges.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Okonkwo said the APC is ₦200 million for a presidential candidate’s billboard and ₦150 million for a governorship candidate’s billboard in Abia State.
He warned that multiplying the ₦200 million fee by the 36 states plus the Federal Capital Territory reveals a deliberate scheme to stifle political competition.
“It’s unfortunate that in Nigeria, the ruling party has made it impossible for the opposition to strive,” Okonkwo remarked. “In Abia State, you are hearing a huge amount for you to put up your billboards for ₦200 million for a presidential candidate.”
He added, “Now, multiply ₦200 million by 36 states, including the FCT, you would see the perfidy. Just an opportunity to advertise and tell Nigerians what you want to do. APC is a scourge that wants to destroy our democracy.”
Okonkwo expressed his disbelief that Governor Otti would consent to such an arrangement, stating, “I’m surprised that Governor Otti will fall for that. As far I’m concerned, that is an APC agenda using Governor Otti to make it impossible for the opposition political parties to campaign, and it’s really unfortunate.”
