African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain Kenneth Okonkwo has urged President Bola Tinubu to relinquish power before the 2027 general elections, suggesting he should resign peacefully and return to his Bourdillon residence in Lagos State.
Okonkwo argued that Tinubu should not wait to contest the 2027 polls, pointing to the deteriorating security situation across the country.
He also commented on the recent Abuja Federal High Court ruling that overturned the deregistration of the ADC, claiming the judgment seeks to frustrate the opposition and pave the way for Tinubu’s coronation rather than a genuine electoral contest.
Okonkwo highlighted the daily reality of insecurity, citing massacres in Plateau and Benue states, beheadings in Oyo State, and stressed that preventing loss of life is preferable to dealing with its aftermath.
He shared a personal anecdote about a worker whose mother was kidnapped in Kaduna State; when the family could not meet the ransom demand, the abductors broke two of the woman’s fingers, underscoring the human toll of the crisis.
Concluding, Okonkwo reiterated that Tinubu should step down now, allowing a peaceful transition instead of proceeding with the 2027 election.
