Kenneth Okonkwo Urges Tinubu to Step Down Ahead of 2027 Election
African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain Kenneth Okonkwo has called on President Bola Tinubu to relinquish power peacefully and return to his Bourdillon residence in Lagos State, rather than contest the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking on the deteriorating security situation, Okonkwo warned that waiting for the next election would be disastrous, noting that violence is a daily reality in many parts of the country.
He also reacted to the recent Abuja Federal High Court ruling that overturned the deregistration of the ADC, claiming the judgment is designed to frustrate the opposition and pave the way for Tinubu’s coronation rather than a genuine electoral contest.
“Is it in the area of insecurity? I told you when you want to give an example of insecurity, you don’t need to refer to yesterday because it’s a daily occurrence. In Plateau, in Benue people are massacred in their numbers, people are beheaded in Oyo State and they want you to praise them for what they would have prevented,” Okonkwo said.
He added that preventing loss of life is preferable to dealing with its aftermath, sharing a personal anecdote about a worker whose mother was kidnapped in Kaduna State and had two fingers broken when the ransom could not be met.
“These incidents are not reported widely, but the message is clear: Tinubu should not even allow the election to hold; he should resign and go in peace,” Okonkwo concluded.
