Kenneth Okonkwo Criticises APC for Imposing ₦200m Campaign Billboard Fees in Abia
A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Kenneth Okonkwo, has denounced the All Progressives Congress (APC) for imposing steep fees on political billboards in Abia State. Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Okonkwo claimed the ruling party is exploiting the state government to choke opposition voices.
He said, “It is unfortunate that in Nigeria the ruling party has made it nearly impossible for the opposition to thrive. In Abia, you are asked to pay ₦200 million just to erect a billboard for a presidential candidate.”
Okonkwo extrapolated the cost across the country, noting that multiplying ₦200 million by the 36 states plus the Federal Capital Territory reveals a blatant attempt to monopolise political advertising. He described the APC’s actions as a “scourge” aimed at undermining democracy.
Expressing his disbelief, Okonkwo added, “I am surprised that Governor Alex Otti would go along with this. As far as I am concerned, this is an APC agenda that uses the governor to make campaigning impossible for opposition parties, and it is truly regrettable.”
The remarks have reignited debate over the rising cost of political advertising in Nigeria and the role of state officials in either enabling or obstructing fair competition among parties.
