Harry Maguire Expresses Shock and Disappointment Over England World Cup Omission
Harry Maguire has admitted he felt “shocked and gutted” after discovering he would not be part of Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for this summer’s World Cup.
The 33‑year‑old Manchester United defender shared his reaction on Instagram a day before Tuchel unveiled his final 26‑man roster for the tournament hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Maguire, who has earned 66 caps for England, had been recalled by Tuchel in March and believed his impressive second‑half campaign at Old Trafford had secured him a place on the plane.
In his statement, he said: “I was confident I could have played a major part this summer for my country after the season I’ve had. I’ve been left shocked and gutted by the decision.” He added that he loved nothing more than wearing the England shirt and wished the selected players all the best.
During the latter part of the season, Maguire played a key role for Manchester United under caretaker manager Michael Carrick, helping the club finish third in the Premier League.
His omission is among several high‑profile absentees. Phil Foden and Cole Palmer are also expected to miss out after inconsistent seasons at Manchester City and Chelsea, respectively.
On the positive side, Ollie Watkins is anticipated to earn a call‑up following a strong finish with Aston Villa, while Ivan Toney could return after scoring 32 goals in 32 league matches for Saudi side Al‑Ahli.
Morgan Gibbs‑White, despite enjoying his best Premier League scoring season with Nottingham Forest, is reportedly set to miss out, as is Luke Shaw. John Stones, however, looks likely to retain his spot despite an injury‑hit season.
Tuchel will announce the final squad ahead of the World Cup kickoff on 11 June across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
