Guardiola Calls Ferguson the Premier League’s Greatest Manager
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has described Sir Alex Ferguson as the greatest manager English football has ever produced. Speaking ahead of the final league match of the season against Aston Villa, Guardiola reflected on Ferguson’s legendary tenure at Manchester United and the mutual respect they have shared over the years.
“He is the greatest in this country,” Guardiola said. “The tenure, the time, and for many, many reasons… I’m happy that Sir Alex Ferguson, the greatest, could see.” He added that City are not the “noisy neighbours” but simply “the neighbours,” and he is pleased that Ferguson has been watching their progress.
Exhaustion Behind Guardiola’s Decision to Step Down
The 55‑year‑old Spaniard also opened up about the draining demands of elite‑level management. He compared his current state to that of former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who stepped away in 2024.
“I share the same feeling as when Jurgen Klopp left. I am running out of energy,” Guardiola admitted. “I feel like I will not have the energy required for a game every three days, to fight for titles and be in front of the players daily.”
He noted that after ten years at the Etihad, the relentless schedule — Selhurst Park, Anfield, Madrid, and more — has taken its toll. Guardiola believes the club now needs fresh energy and a new voice to continue building on the talented squad they possess.
“Ten years is a lot of time. I think the club needs a new manager, new energy. With these incredible players we have right now, it’s time to start writing another chapter,” he concluded.
