Gennaro Gattuso Appointed Lazio Head Coach Amid Fan Backlash
Former Italy international Gennaro Gattuso has been named head coach of Serie A side Lazio, the club announced on June 23. The appointment follows the exit of Maurizio Sarri and marks a new chapter for the Roman club.
In an official statement, Lazio said: “S.S. Lazio S.p.A. confirms the appointment of Mr. Gennaro Gattuso as Head Coach of the First Team. The club welcomes its new manager and is confident that his experience, professionalism and determination will help achieve its sporting objectives.”
The 48‑year‑old former World Cup winner brings a reputation for intensity, discipline and a fiercely competitive style, honed during his playing days and previous coaching stints at AC Milan and Napoli, where he lifted the Coppa Italia.
Gattuso’s arrival comes after a disappointing spell in charge of the Italian national team, which failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Lazio are expected to offer him a contract of up to two years as they look to rebound from a season that ended without European competition.
The announcement, however, triggered an immediate backlash from sections of the Lazio faithful. On the club’s official X account, user #MatteoM96973 commented: “In the conviction that his experience, professionalism and determination can contribute to the achievement of the club’s sporting objectives. FOR SERIE B IT’S FINE.”
Another supporter, #sampaolo71, wrote: “But wasn’t he supposed to leave Italy? #LotitoOut #Lotitovattene #GattusoOut.”
User #CristianoC9636 questioned the club’s ambitions, asking: “But what would the club’s sporting objectives be? The fight for survival?” while #Trattoria_Lazio simply posted: “WHICH OBJECTIVES?”
Despite the criticism, Lazio president Claudio Lotito has expressed his backing for Gattuso, hoping the new coach can steady the side amid financial constraints and growing supporter unrest.
The appointment also raises interest for Nigeria midfielder Fisayo Dele‑Bashiru, who will now need to impress a manager known for demanding relentless work rate and physical commitment from his players.
