A man has ignited heated discussion online after claiming that regularly eating bread could endanger the health of both men and women.
Online Nutrition Debate Triggers Reactions
The commentator, whose remarks spread across wellness forums on Monday, argued that modern wheat has lost the natural nutrients it once possessed due to genetic alterations introduced many years ago.
He stated that processing and modification of wheat since the 1960s supposedly stripped away beneficial elements and introduced substances that may lead to chronic health issues.
Responses were divided; some users concurred that overconsumption of processed foods fuels growing obesity and diabetes rates, while others insisted that bread remains an essential, low‑cost nutrient source for millions of Nigerians.
He added, “I examined the history of wheat from the 1960s when it underwent genetic modification. They eliminated everything that made wheat wholesome and inserted components that render it hazardous for human consumption.”
Health Professionals Advocate Moderation
Nutrition experts, however, repeatedly advise against outright banning staple foods and instead promote balanced consumption.
They note that whole‑grain bread and varied diets continue to supply vital fiber and energy when paired with fruits and vegetables.
He further warned, “This is the moment to stop eating bread if you wish to enjoy a long life,” urging people to turn to healthier local alternatives.
Worries about processed foods are not recent. In 2023, multiple Nigerian nutrition campaigns urged citizens to cut back on sugar and ultra‑processed items amid a surge in non‑communicable diseases across the country.
