A commentator has ignited online discussion after attributing rising ethnic tensions and insecurity in parts of Lagos and Ogun states to political divisions stemming from the 2023 presidential election.
Escalating insecurity concerns in Lagos and Ogun States
In a widely shared statement released on Tuesday, the speaker claimed that suspected Fulani herders were creating disturbances across Ogun State and had also moved into Ikorodu in Lagos State, sowing fear among local residents.
Nevertheless, he contended that political figures were channeling public frustration toward the Igbo community due to the increasing influence of Labour Party presidential aspirant, Peter Obi.
Linking Peter Obi’s Lagos victory to current tensions
He pointed out that Obi’s showing in the 2023 election continues to fuel the unrest.
He argued that the former Anambra State governor turned into “a political threat and nightmare” for President Bola Tinubu after overcoming the ruling party in Lagos during the presidential vote.
“While people are dying, we are busy playing politics and tribal cards. They say burial rice is sweet until it is cooked in your own house,” he remarked.
He additionally cautioned Nigerians against fomenting ethnic division for political advantage. “Keep playing politics with tribe at your own peril,” the statement added.
The remarks have sparked ongoing debate online, especially as insecurity worries intensify across portions of the Southwest.
In 2023, ethnic hostilities also rose following the presidential vote, notably in Lagos where numerous voters described intimidation and tribally motivated attacks during the balloting.
