Eight Players Earn FIFA Man of the Match Awards in 2026 World Cup Opening Matches
The race for individual honours at the 2026 FIFA World Cup is already underway, with eight players named Superior Player of the Match after the first round of group‑stage fixtures.
FIFA presents the award after each game to the athlete judged to have made the biggest impact. Among the early recipients, United States striker Folarin Balogun shone in a 4‑1 victory over Paraguay, scoring twice to give his side a strong start.
Brazil’s Vinícius Júnior also claimed the honour following his influential performance in a 1‑1 draw with Morocco in Group C.

A total of 104 Superior Player of the Match awards will be distributed throughout the tournament, with the final recipient to be announced after the World Cup final on 19 July at New York‑New Jersey Stadium.
