Afrobeats superstar Davido has opened up about the early days of his music journey, revealing that he once kept his father’s support out of the spotlight. He wanted his talent to be judged on its own merits, not on his family name.
Early Denial of Father’s Involvement
Speaking with Vibe Q, Davido said he avoided mentioning his father’s role when he visited a nearby recording studio. He feared that people would treat him differently if they knew about his affluent background.
He explained that the decision ultimately paid off, as listeners later recognised his genuine ability.
Father’s Investment and Studio Support
Davido also highlighted the major role his father played in nurturing his passion. The singer recalled that his dad built a professional recording studio worth more than $100,000 at the time, allowing him to return home every weekend from school to work on his music.
“I used to deny my dad whenever I went to the studio down our street. I didn’t want people to know because they’d treat me differently. It all paid off—now they know I was genuinely good at music,” Davido said.
“My daddy was ready to give me anything. He built me a studio that cost over $100,000 back then. I was still in school, and I’d come home every weekend to work on music,” he added.
