Nigerian Afrobeats star David Adeleke, better known as Davido, recently shared a harrowing episode from the dawn of his career. He said the ordeal unfolded just two months after his first hits began dominating radio play and earned him a performance booking in Ghana.
Describing the whirlwind reception in Accra, Davido likened the attention to that received by global icons such as Michael Jackson and Justin Bieber. “Every week brought something new,” he recalled, noting the excitement of watching his climb the charts.
The Photo Leak Incident
During that trip, Davido met a woman at a nightclub. He described the encounter as his first experience with a groupie and said the night ended on a high note. The following morning, his manager knocked persistently on his hotel room door, urging him to stay calm.
The manager informed him that the woman had taken a photograph of him while he was asleep and shared it with her friends. She had been telling people she was with Davido, but they doubted her—so she produced the picture as proof.
The image spread quickly, reaching Davido’s family. His father and sisters began calling him in a panic. Overwhelmed by the sudden invasion of privacy, Davido admitted he felt pushed to the edge.
“If I had seen a balcony that day, I would have jumped. I was going crazy,” he said, revealing how close he came to a tragic decision.
Lesson Learned
Reflecting on the episode, Davido attributes part of the vulnerability to his youth and his enjoyment of the female attention that fame brought. He believes the incident was a necessary wake‑up call about the dangers that accompany celebrity status.
He now warns other young public figures: fame makes you a target, even when you’re simply trying to have fun. “Take their phones,” he advises, urging peers to guard their privacy vigilantly.
