Nigerian Afrobeats sensation David Adeleke, better known as Davido, recently reflected on a frightening episode from the start of his career. He said the ordeal made him question whether the price of fame was worth the intense exposure it brought.
Rapid Success and a Ghana Booking
The incident occurred barely two months after his first tracks began dominating radio stations. At that point Davido had only released a couple of songs, yet they were already massive hits, earning him nationwide recognition and a performance invitation in Ghana.
Describing the welcome he received in Accra, Davido likened the frenzy to that surrounding global icons like Michael Jackson or Justin Bieber. He recalled feeling thrilled, saying, “Yo, we lit.”
The Night with a Groupie
During his Ghana trip, Davido visited a nightclub where he met a woman who would become his first “groupie.” The evening started positively, and he remembered it as a great night.
Photo Leak and Immediate Fallout
The following morning, his manager repeatedly knocked on his hotel door, urging him to calm down. The manager informed Davido that the woman had taken a picture of him while he was asleep and shared it with her friends.
According to Davido, the woman had been telling acquaintances she was with him, but they doubted her claim. To prove it, she snapped the photo and circulated it.
The image spread quickly, reaching his family. His father and sisters began calling him in distress.
A Moment of Despair
The singer admitted the situation became overwhelming. He said, “If I saw a balcony that day, I would have jumped. I was going crazy.” The leak exposed him to a stark downside of early fame: people close to a celebrity can exploit their access for personal attention.
Lessons Learned
Reflecting on the episode, Davido acknowledged his youth and appetite for female attention contributed to the vulnerability. He believes the incident was a necessary lesson from God about the perils of celebrity life.
He now warns emerging public figures: “You’re young, you’re famous, you’re a target. Even if you want to have fun, take their phones.” The experience taught him to guard his privacy and remain vigilant about the dangers that accompany sudden fame.
