Afrobeats star Davido recently opened up about the early days of his music journey, revealing that he deliberately kept his father’s support out of the public eye. He wanted his talent to be judged on its own merit, not on his family background.
In an interview with Vibe Q, Davido explained that he avoided mentioning his father’s connection when he visited a studio close to home. He feared that people would treat him differently if they knew about his privileged upbringing.
The strategy paid off. As listeners became familiar with his sound, they recognized his genuine ability, proving that his success was rooted in talent rather than nepotism.
Davido also highlighted the major role his father played in nurturing his passion. While still a student, the elder Davido provided the resources needed for him to develop his craft.
He disclosed that his father financed a professional recording studio valued at more than $100,000 at the time. This facility allowed Davido to return home every weekend from school to record, write, and refine his songs.
The backing gave him the freedom to focus on improving his skills and lay the foundation for what would become a thriving music career.
Davido summed it up succinctly: “I used to deny my dad whenever I went to the studio down our street. I didn’t want people to know because they’d treat me differently. It all paid off—now they know I was genuinely good at music.”
He added, “My daddy was ready to give me anything. He built me a studio that cost over $100,000 back then. I was still in school, and I’d come home every weekend to work on music.”
