Czech Coach Miroslav Koubek Resigns After World Cup Group-stage Exit
Czech Republic head coach Miroslav Koubek has resigned following the team’s disappointing performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where they finished bottom of their group with one draw and two defeats.
The Czech Football Association announced the resignation on June 29, stating that the decision came after discussions between Koubek and FA president David Truba.
Truba said they reached an agreement to end cooperation after an open and honest conversation, acknowledging Koubek’s role in qualifying the national team for the tournament after a 20‑year absence.
In his farewell remarks, Koubek accepted shared responsibility for the disappointing results and cited ongoing media criticism as a factor that made his position untenable.
He thanked the FA president, the executive committee, Petr Čech, the coaching staff, association workers, the players, and the fans for their support, expressing pride in having led the national team.
Koubek lamented that he will not be able to implement the plans he had prepared for the team’s future, but wished his successor and the squad continued success.
His departure adds to a list of coaches who have left their posts after group‑stage eliminations at the World Cup, including Tunisia’s Sabri Lamouchi and Uruguay’s Marcelo Bielsa.
