Blessing Nze Responds to Christian Backlash Over Lesbian Role in Blood Sisters
Nollywood actress Blessing Nze Obasi has spoken about the criticism she faced from some Christians after portraying a lesbian inmate in the second season of Blood Sisters. During an interview with Yanga FM, she explained that many viewers struggled to separate her professional performance from her personal beliefs.
According to Nze, acting requires taking on diverse characters, and such roles should not be mistaken for an actor’s real‑life values or lifestyle. She emphasized that the storyline was inspired by real‑life situations and was not created to promote or endorse same‑sex relationships.
She said the production aimed to tell a story based on events that occur in certain settings, handling the subject with sensitivity. “We are telling a real story about things that truly happen,” she stated. “The Christians came for me and attacked, saying ‘as a child of God, how would I take such a role?’ I replied that we are depicting real stories of what happens in prison. The production company was careful not to show the horrific details; they are not in support of lesbianism but are simply narrating the story. There is still a lot of positivity in the project, and I chose to focus on that.”
Nze’s remarks highlight the ongoing debate about artistic expression versus religious expectations in Nigeria’s entertainment industry. She urges audiences to view acting as a craft that explores varied human experiences without conflating it with personal endorsement.
