Atiku Commends Federal High Court for Dismissing Suit Against ADC Leadership
The presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has welcomed the Federal High Court in Abuja’s decision to strike out a lawsuit challenging the party’s leadership.
He said the judgment delivered by Justice Musa Liman affirms constitutional democracy and rejects attempts to politicise the judiciary.
Atiku noted the ruling reiterates that internal party matters are governed by the party’s constitution and its internal dispute‑resolution mechanisms.
“The court could not have been clearer,” he stated. “It rightly held that the matter borders on the internal affairs of the ADC, that the Federal High Court lacks jurisdiction, and that the plaintiffs neither exhausted the internal remedies provided by the party’s constitution nor established the locus standi required to invoke the jurisdiction of the court.”
He added, “We commend Justice Liman for refusing to allow the judiciary to be converted into an extension of partisan political warfare.”
The former vice president described the judgment as a significant boost for the rule of law, especially as opposition parties face sustained political pressure.
Citing an African proverb, he said, “No matter how long the night lasts, the day must surely break,” and added that while political desperation may cast temporary shadows over democracy, truth and justice will ultimately prevail.
Atiku alleged coordinated efforts to weaken opposition politics through litigation and manipulation of institutions.
“We are particularly encouraged because this judgment comes at a time when certain desperate elements operating from the corridors of power have sought, through every conceivable means, to destabilise the opposition and frustrate the growing aspirations of millions of Nigerians who desire democratic change,” he said.
He listed tactics such as failed attempts to deregister parties, sponsorship of proxy litigations, and manipulation of institutions, calling today’s decision a resounding affirmation that the judiciary remains the last hope of the common man.
Atiku defended the legitimacy of the ADC’s current leadership, insisting the National Working Committee headed by former Senate President David Mark emerged through a lawful process in line with the ADC constitution.
“The David Mark‑led National Working Committee emerged through a lawful and transparent process in accordance with the constitution of our great party. No amount of forum shopping or judicial adventurism can alter that fact,” he affirmed.
He urged party members to stay united and focused on building the party for future contests, while calling on democrats to continue defending democratic institutions rather than merely celebrating the court victory.
“This victory is not an invitation to triumphalism. Rather, it is a renewed call for all democrats to continue strengthening our institutions and protecting the sanctity of the rule of law,” he added.
Atiku concluded by expressing confidence that the ADC remains united and capable of offering Nigerians a credible alternative.
