Asamoah Gyan Critiques Ghana’s Poor Show, Says Colombia Earned World Cup Victory
Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has voiced his disappointment with the Black Stars’ performance in their 1‑0 loss to Colombia, stating that the side fell far short of what was expected and that the defeat was justified.
Colombia seized an early chance in the first half and defended their lead to advance, ending Ghana’s 2026 World Cup hopes and sending the Black Stars packing.
Speaking shortly after the match on July 4, Ghana’s all‑time leading scorer said the team lacked the urgency and attacking thrust required in a knockout encounter.
“The display was below average; there was no sense of urgency,” Gyan told the Ghanaian sports outlet Joy Online.
The former Sunderland forward also questioned why Ghana failed to push men forward after falling behind, arguing that not enough players entered dangerous areas while chasing an equaliser.
“We (Ghana) did not have men in the box,” he added.
Gyan praised Colombia’s mindset, noting that they kept pressing for more goals even after taking the lead rather than sitting back to protect it.
“Colombia were ahead but kept fighting to score more,” he remarked.
He concluded that the result was hardly debatable.
“In short, Colombia deserved the win,” Gyan concluded.
