Anthony Joshua vs Tyson Fury Fight May Move to New York
The long‑awaited heavyweight clash between Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury could finally happen in the United States, with Madison Square Garden in New York emerging as the leading venue after Netflix reportedly shifted talks away from the United Kingdom.
Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix said the bout is “almost certain” to be staged in the US, favouring a Friday night slot instead of the traditional Saturday schedule used for major British boxing events.
November 20 is among the dates under consideration, partly to avoid overlapping with college football broadcasts in America.
The fight is projected to generate a purse exceeding £100 million.
Both fighters revived hopes of the meeting in July by returning to winning ways; Fury, 37, stopped Mariusz Wach in Thailand, while Joshua, 36, recovered from two early‑round knock‑downs to halt Kristian Prenga in Jeddah.
Promoter Eddie Hearn has stressed that Joshua’s contract stipulates the bout must be held in the United Kingdom. However, Saudi boxing chief Turki Alalshikh, a key figure in the negotiations, is believed to prefer an American venue to maximise the television audience.
Hearn told BoxingScene that “there has been some murmuring of the fight taking place in the US. The contract specifically states that the fight must take place in the UK.”
The prospect of moving the contest out of Britain has drawn criticism from fans who argue that a showdown of this magnitude belongs at Wembley Stadium rather than Madison Square Garden.
Mannix added that the shift would be a major disappointment for British supporters, calling it “the biggest slap in the face of British boxing fans that you could possibly make” and attributing the move purely to financial motives.
Joshua’s former training partner, Richard Riakporhe, noted that the former world champion has spent the past five years preparing, on and off, for a showdown with Fury after two earlier attempts to make the fight collapsed.
Negotiations remain ongoing, and neither the date nor the venue has been officially confirmed.
