ADC Urges INEC Chairman Amupitan to Choose Honour Over Disgrace Ahead of 2027 Elections
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), led by Chairman Joash Amupitan, of being torn between upholding its independence and succumbing to political pressure from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections.
ADC chieftain Abdullahi expressed sympathy for Amupitan, acknowledging the intense pressure he faces. He challenged the INEC chairman to decide how he wants to be remembered in Nigeria’s democratic history — either with honour or with public disgrace.
Abdullahi stated, “INEC is caught in a conflict. On one side is its desire to remain independent; on the other is the pressure from the ruling party. At times it yields, at other times it resists and tries to uphold its independence.
“We feel for the INEC chairman because we understand the pressure he is under. However, this issue extends beyond an individual; it concerns the integrity of the INEC institution itself.
“Politicians are not the only ones under scrutiny. ADC is not the sole party on trial, nor is any other political party. INEC, like the judiciary, is also being tested.
“INEC has a chance to show that its allegiance lies with the Nigerian Constitution and the Nigerian people. Every administration eventually departs office and is judged by history.
“History will record Prof. Amupitan’s actions. He must choose the role he wishes to play in Nigeria’s democratic journey — whether he will be remembered with honour or with ignominy. The moment to make that decision is now.”
