Accord Party Chair Condemns EFCC’s Freeze of Osun State Account Ahead of Election
The Chairman of the Accord Party in Osun State, Victor Akande, has criticised the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for freezing the Osun State Government’s bank account just days before the state’s governorship election.
Speaking on ARISE Television, Akande described the action as ill‑timed and capable of sparking unnecessary political tension. While he affirmed his support for anti‑corruption agencies carrying out their duties, he questioned why such a drastic step was taken so close to the polls.
“The timing of the EFCC freezing the account of the Osun State Government is wrong,” Akande stated. He warned that the sudden move opened the door to widespread suspicion and conspiracy theories among citizens and political actors.
Akande added, “We are not saying the EFCC should not carry out its responsibilities, but why a few days to the election? They gave room for the public to have misconceptions, and that is what is happening.”
President Tinubu’s Intervention Defended
Defending President Bola Tinubu’s directive asking the EFCC to reverse the freeze, Akande argued that the President acted within his constitutional duty to preserve law, order, and democratic stability.
“As Commander‑in‑Chief and Chief Security Officer of the nation, the President has a responsibility to step in when the actions of a federal agency threaten public peace or create chaos before an election,” he maintained.
He further warned that the EFCC’s abrupt decision projects Nigeria in a negative light internationally and creates the impression that state institutions are being used to manipulate electoral outcomes.
“What the EFCC did puts the country in a bad light and seems like a threat to democracy because of the timing of the action,” Akande concluded.
