Peter Okoye Speaks Out on Family Pressure Over Pregnancy
Nigerian singer Peter Okoye, best known as one half of the defunct duo P‑Square, has recalled a difficult period in his life when his then‑girlfriend Lola became pregnant.
Determined to control the narrative, Peter announced the pregnancy live on stage after receiving an award at the Soundcity Awards. He dedicated the accolade to God, their fans, and finally to “the mother of my unborn child.”
Immediately following his dedication, his twin brother Paul and older brother Jude walked out of the ceremony. They told him that the public announcement would ruin their careers.
The brothers went further, insisting that Lola should abort the baby. Peter claimed they even fabricated an email to make it appear that the child was not his and to accuse Lola of using the pregnancy to trap him.
At the time, Peter was 27 years old. He described the episode as a painful betrayal by the very people who were supposed to support him.
