Arsenal have officially confirmed the signing of goalkeeper Illan Meslier from Leeds United. The 26‑year‑old French international becomes the club’s latest addition as they prepare for the upcoming season.
Meslier spent seven seasons at Elland Road, making 215 appearances in all competitions and keeping 70 clean sheets. His move is pending the finalisation of the required regulatory processes.
Early Career and Rise to Prominence
The goalkeeper began his professional journey at French side Lorient, progressing through the academy before signing his first senior contract in February 2018. He made his debut later that year, recording a clean sheet in a 1‑0 Coupe de la Ligue victory over Valenciennes at just 18 years old.
Strong performances during the 2018/19 season earned him a loan to Leeds United in August 2019. Meslier’s first appearance for the Yorkshire club came in an FA Cup third‑round tie against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in January 2020. He played a key role in helping Leeds secure promotion to the Premier League.
Leeds United Spell and Premier League Experience
After Leeds’ promotion, the club made Meslier’s transfer permanent. He established himself as the first‑choice goalkeeper, amassing 107 Premier League appearances during his tenure. This top‑flight experience will now be added to Mikel Arteta’s squad.
Player’s Reaction
Speaking after completing the move, Meslier said:
“I’m extremely happy. It’s a great day for me because I have just joined the champions. For me, Arsenal is the biggest club in England.
I’m very happy and very proud to join Arsenal. I cannot wait to show the love that I’ve got for this badge, and I cannot wait to win trophies with this team, because this is a club that needs to lift trophies again and again.”
Meslier will wear the number 30 shirt and is expected to report for pre‑season training with his new teammates at the Sobha Realty Training Centre when Arsenal return.
