Christian Eriksen Begins Rehabilitation in Denmark
Christian Eriksen will start an individual rehabilitation programme in Denmark after collapsing during a friendly match for VfL Wolfsburg in June.
The midfielder explained that the incident was unrelated to the cardiac arrest he suffered at Euro 2020 and praised the implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) he has worn since that event.
“It was a different situation from what happened in 2021,” Eriksen said, adding that his ICD “did exactly what it was designed to do: protect me when I needed it.”
He confirmed he is “doing well” and recovering at home with his family.
Following discussions with Wolfsburg’s managing director Dieter Hecking, the club decided that the 34‑year‑old will complete his rehabilitation in his native Denmark.
“VfL remain in regular contact with Christian and the doctors overseeing his treatment. We continue to wish Christian all the very best with his rehabilitation,” the Bundesliga side stated.
Eriksen received an ICD after his cardiac arrest during Denmark’s Euro 2020 match against Finland. Italian rules prevented him from playing for Inter Milan with the device, leading to his exit from Serie A.
He returned to action with Brentford in early 2022, spent three seasons at Manchester United, and joined Wolfsburg in September 2025. Both the Premier League and Bundesliga now allow players with an ICD to compete.
An ICD is a small device implanted beneath the skin and connected to the heart by thin wires. It monitors heart rhythm and can deliver an electric shock or regular pacing when needed to restore a normal heartbeat.
