2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32 Overview
The group stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup concluded on Sunday, paving the way for the tournament’s inaugural Round of 32.
How the Round of 32 Was Formed
FIFA expanded the finals from 32 to 48 teams for this edition, adding an extra knockout round before the traditional Round of 16. The top two teams from each of the twelve groups qualified automatically, and the eight best third‑placed sides filled the remaining spots to create a 32‑team bracket.
Notable Qualifiers
One of the standout stories was debutants Cabo Verde. The African side reached the knockout stage without winning a match, recording three draws against Spain, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia – a feat not seen since Chile in 1998. They will now face Lionel Messi’s Argentina in a historic clash.
Elsewhere, Egypt secured a World Cup knockout appearance for the first time in its history, while DR Congo advanced after beating Uzbekistan in their final group match.
Portugal, led by Cristiano Ronaldo, finished second in Group K following a goalless draw with Colombia, and Croatia claimed second place in Group L with a victory over Ghana behind group winners England.
Uruguay’s early exit was among the biggest surprises of the group stage, as the South Americans failed to reach the knockout rounds.
What Lies Ahead
The winners of each Round of 32 tie will progress to the Round of 16, after which the competition continues in a straight‑knockout format through the quarter‑finals, semi‑finals and final.
