Xavi Hernandez Open to AFCON Coaching Role
Barcelona legend Xavi Hernandez has revealed that he is ready to move into international management and would welcome a coaching position at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The 46‑year‑old former Spain midfielder has been without a club since leaving Barcelona in May 2024 after a trophyless season ended his three‑year stint at Camp Nou.
During his time with Barcelona, Xavi led the team to the 2022/23 LaLiga title and the Supercopa de España, compiling a record of 90 wins, 24 draws and 29 losses in 143 matches for a 62.9 % win rate.
Before Barcelona, Xavi enjoyed a successful spell with Qatari side Al Sadd, where he collected seven trophies. He believes a national team role now aligns with both his career ambitions and family life.
“My next step could be a national team. I’ll say it openly: this could be a good fit for me,” Xavi told RNE via beIN Sports. He added that a club schedule would limit his time with his young children, making an international job more appealing.
The former midfielder expressed enthusiasm for taking part in major tournaments such as the World Cup, European Championship, AFCON or the Asian Cup as a coach.
Xavi’s playing career is legendary. He made 767 appearances for Barcelona, scoring 85 goals, and held the club’s appearance record before Lionel Messi surpassed it. With Spain he earned 133 caps, was a key figure in the triumphs at Euro 2008, the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012, and was named Player of the Tournament at Euro 2008.
