A Nigerian woman has described how her aunt, freshly arrived from the United Kingdom, handed out ₦100,000 to every adult family member during the holidays, only for the gesture to ignite a heated family disagreement.
The tale, shared on the social platform X, began as a generous Christmas present but quickly evolved into a conflict over money.
Aunt’s Holiday Cash Distribution
She explained that her aunt, after returning from the UK for the December festivities, chose to give each grown relative a sum of one hundred thousand naira.
One cousin accepted the cash, expressed gratitude, and departed without incident.
Relative’s Request for Additional Funds
However, the same cousin reappeared two days later, asking for an extra ₦800,000 to launch a business venture.
The aunt declined the request, prompting the cousin to voice his displeasure in the family’s WhatsApp chat.
The woman recounted the exchange:
“My aunt came back from the UK for Christmas last December and gave every adult in the family ₦100k each.
One cousin collected his money, thanked her and left.
Two days later, he returned to ask for 800k to start a business.
My aunt refused.
That night, he posted in the family WhatsApp group: ‘Some people travel abroad and forget where they came from.’
My aunt replied with screenshots showing she had been paying his children’s school fees and rent for three years.
His response was… ‘was I supposed to be rolling on the floor for that?’”
