APC Confirms Candidate Replacements Ahead of Elections
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced that it is replacing some of its candidates for the forthcoming elections, explaining that the changes were made to fix irregularities discovered during the screening process.
The party said it has already started forwarding the names of its approved candidates to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for publication.
In an interview with the BBC, APC Director of Publicity Bala Ibrahim revealed that about 2,500 aspirants were screened for various elective positions on the party’s platform.
Ibrahim added that certificates of candidacy have been issued to the successful aspirants, while the final list has been sent to INEC.
He stated, “There is nothing unusual about replacing a candidate’s name. If something was not done correctly, justice requires that it be corrected.”
The APC spokesman noted that a reconciliation committee has been set up to engage with aspirants whose names were dropped, helping them understand that democracy does not guarantee that everyone gets exactly what they want.
Ibrahim expressed confidence that dissatisfied aspirants would remain loyal to the party, hoping they would continue to contribute and possibly be called upon to serve in other roles, perhaps with greater impact than the office they originally sought.
The announcement followed complaints from some APC members who accused the party of unfairly removing their names despite years of loyalty and service.
