Aisha Yesufu Calls for Opposition Unity Behind Peter Obi
Human rights activist Aisha Yesufu has appealed to Nigeria’s opposition parties to set aside their differences and rally behind Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). She emphasized that such cooperation does not constitute surrender but represents a deliberate strategy to unseat the incumbent administration.
Yesufu pointed out that victory in the 2027 election will not go to the side with the loudest supporters, but to the coalition that can effectively organise itself. She described Obi as a candidate with a strong track record who belongs to no single faction, making him a suitable rallying point for a broad opposition front.
Referring to the 2023 general election, she noted that President Bola Tinubu was declared winner with 36 percent of the vote, meaning the remaining 64 percent was split among opposition groups. According to Yesufu, the arithmetic already favours the opposition if they can consolidate their forces.
She lamented the current fragmentation within the opposition and urged party operatives, organisers, fundraisers, and strategists to join a coordination channel designed to link existing efforts without replacing them.
“Peter Obi is not the candidate of one camp. Unifying under him is not surrender. It is strategy. And unifying does not mean dissolving your party, your platform, or your principles.”

Yesufu concluded that a unified opposition, anchored by a credible candidate like Obi, presents the best chance to change the country’s leadership in the upcoming election.
