Lionel Messi Included in Argentina Squad for Historic Sixth World Cup Appearance
Argentina captain Lionel Messi will feature in his sixth FIFA World Cup after being named in coach Lionel Scaloni’s 26‑man squad for the 2026 tournament.
At 38, Messi aims to add to his legacy after leading La Albiceleste to victory in Qatar 2022, where they defeated France on penalties in a dramatic final.
He already holds the record for most World Cup appearances by any player (26 matches) and will join Cristiano Ronaldo as the only men to have played in six editions.
Scaloni announced the squad on Thursday, May 28, as Argentina prepares to defend the title won in 2022.
The Inter Miami forward leads a strong contingent packed with Premier League talent, including Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, Manchester United defender Lisandro Martínez, Tottenham centre‑back Cristian Romero, Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister and Chelsea’s Enzo Fernández.
Messi has made 198 appearances for Argentina and could reach the 200‑game mark before the World Cup begins if he plays in upcoming friendlies against Honduras and Iceland next month.
Argentina will open their Group J campaign on 17 June in Kansas City against Algeria, followed by matches against Austria and Jordan in Dallas.
The squad announcement also highlighted a notable omission, with Real Madrid youngster Franco Mastantuono left out despite growing expectations.
