Neymar’s Calf Injury Raises Concerns for Brazil’s World Cup Opener
Brazil’s World Cup preparations have suffered an early setback after Neymar was ruled out of the upcoming friendlies against Panama and Egypt due to a grade‑two calf injury that could also keep him sidelined for the tournament opener versus Morocco.
The 34‑year‑old forward underwent medical tests on May 28, and an MRI scan confirmed a partial tear of muscle fibres in his right calf. Team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar explained that a grade‑two strain typically requires two to three weeks of rest and rehabilitation before a player can return to full training.
Brazil’s campaign kicks off on June 13 in New Jersey against Morocco, followed by matches versus Haiti in Philadelphia and Scotland in Miami later in the group stage.
Neymar had only linked up with the squad on Tuesday, missed Wednesday’s training session after noticing swelling in his right calf, and was immediately sent for further examination.
The diagnosis contradicts earlier assurances from Santos physician Rodrigo Zogaib, who had described the issue as simple swelling and insisted Neymar would be fit to train with the national team.
The injury adds to coach Carlo Ancelotti’s selection headaches. Arsenal’s Gabriel and Gabriel Martinelli, along with Paris Saint‑Geraint captain Marquinhos, are unavailable for the Panama friendly because of their involvement in the Champions League final on May 30.
Despite missing Brazil action since 2023 due to persistent injury problems, Ancelotti retained Neymar in the World Cup squad over alternatives such as Chelsea’s Joao Pedro and Tottenham’s Richarlison, citing the player’s recent continuity and good physical condition.
Selection for the tournament means Neymar is in line to appear at a fourth World Cup, having featured in the 2014, 2018 and 2022 editions.
Ancelotti defended the decision during the squad announcement ceremony in Rio de Janeiro, stating that the coaching staff had spent the entire year analysing Neymar’s form and fitness.
Inside the venue, fans reacted with loud applause when Neymar’s name was read out.
