Xabi Alonso Begins Chelsea Tenure
Chelsea Football Club has ushered in a new era with Xabi Alonso reporting for duty as the club’s head coach.
The 44‑year‑old Spaniard arrived at the Cobham training ground on Thursday, marking the start of his reign at Stamford Bridge.
Alonso brings coaching pedigree from spells at Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid, having been appointed in May.
The club confirmed his arrival via a video posted on its channels, featuring the captions “Xabi Alonso arrives at Cobham,” “This is where it starts,” and “A new chapter awaits.”
Chelsea endured a lacklustre 2023‑24 season, finishing tenth in the Premier League and missing out on European competition.
The Blues hope Alonso’s tactical acumen and experience will restore stability and push the team back toward the top of English football.
Although Alonso is best known as a former Liverpool midfielder, he is no stranger to Stamford Bridge, having scored the lone goal that ended Chelsea’s 86‑match unbeaten home league run and later converting a penalty in the dramatic 4‑4 Champions League quarter‑final draw in 2008‑09.
If the project proceeds as planned, Alonso is expected to remain at the helm until the summer of 2030.
