Germany Confirms Nagelsmann Exit, Opens Formal Talks With Jürgen Klopp
The German Football Association (DFB) announced on Thursday that it has officially ended Julian Nagelsmann’s contract as head coach of the men’s national team. The decision came after a unanimous vote by the DFB’s shareholder representatives and supervisory board, acting on the recommendation of president Bernd Neuendorf.
The move follows Germany’s early exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which was hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico. A private meeting held a day earlier saw Nagelsmann request to step down, citing the need for a fresh start after the tournament disappointment.
Nagelsmann’s Farewell Comments
President Bernd Neuendorf praised Nagelsmann’s work since September 2023, highlighting his commitment, dedication and honourable conduct. Nagelsmann himself admitted the decision was difficult but stressed that the national team required a new direction.
He said, “After such a significant defeat, this team deserves a fresh start without the weight of the past. I want to thank my coaching staff, the players and everyone at the DFB who supported us. I am especially grateful to the fans for their unwavering support and trust, which gave us strength even in the most difficult moments.”
DFB Leadership Backs the Decision
Sporting director Rudi Völler echoed the sentiment, noting that Nagelsmann placed the national team’s interests above his own despite his desire to continue leading the squad. Völler expressed confidence that Nagelsmann will achieve success elsewhere and thanked him for the trust and collaboration shown during his tenure.
The DFB also confirmed the departure of assistant coaches Benjamin Glück and Benjamin Hübner, thanking both for their service alongside Nagelsmann.
Focus Shifts to Jürgen Klopp
Attention now turns to former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp. The DFB revealed it will immediately open formal discussions with Klopp, who has previously indicated a willingness to take charge of the German national team.
Additional DFB Changes
In a related development, sports managing director Andreas Rettig announced he will leave the DFB when his contract expires at the end of the year, citing personal reasons. Rettig informed Neuendorf of his decision before the World Cup began.
