WAFCON 2026: Super Falcons Brace for Crucial Zambia Clash After Shock Loss to Malawi

The Super Falcons of Nigeria enter a pivotal moment in their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2026 campaign as they prepare to face Zambia tonight at 9 p.m., following a surprising 3‑2 defeat to Malawi in their opening Group C match.

As defending champions, Nigeria were anticipated to start their title defence with a win, particularly against tournament debutants Malawi. Instead, the Scorchers delivered one of the biggest upsets in recent WAFCON history, leaving Justin Madugu’s side under early pressure.

Temwa Chawinga spearheaded Malawi’s attack with two goals, while her sister Tabita added a third, putting the newcomers ahead 3‑1 deep into stoppage time. Nigeria pulled one back through a Rasheedat Ajibade penalty, and Uchenna Kanu netted a late goal, but the comeback fell short.

Now the Super Falcons shift focus to Zambia, who lead Group C after a commanding 6‑0 victory over Egypt. Another loss would jeopardise Nigeria’s hopes of retaining the continental crown. Currently third in the group, Nigeria are separated from fourth‑placed Egypt only by goal difference.

Ahead of the Zambia encounter, Super Falcons coach Justine Madugu dismissed criticism of his tactics after the Malawi loss.

“They are questioning my technical and tactical ability because we lost a game. But was the Malawi game the first I have handled with the Super Falcons?” Madugu told reporters on Friday.

“It was not the first match; I have overseen several other victories with the team. Nobody questioned me then.”

“We know what we are doing. We remain focused and look forward. As I said, the last game was not the only one we have played at WAFCON. We competed in the 2024 edition and emerged victorious. Because we lost one match, people are questioning the tactics – they are entitled to do so, and I have no issue with that.”

Regarding the upcoming clash, Madugu added, “The mood is positive; everyone looks sharp. We have moved past the disappointment of the Malawi result and are eager for the test against Zambia.”
