Chelsea Secure Danny Welbeck Signing
Chelsea have confirmed the acquisition of veteran striker Danny Welbeck from Premier League side Brighton and Hove Albion. The club announced the move on its official website on 1 August, revealing that Welbeck has signed a contract that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2028.
The 35‑year‑old, who has earned 42 caps for England, will join Xabi Alonso’s squad during the Blues’ pre‑season tour. Welbeck enjoyed a productive spell at Brighton, scoring 13 Premier League goals in 37 appearances last season.
Welbeck began his senior career at Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson, winning the Premier League, two League Cups, the Community Shield and the FIFA Club World Cup. He later spent five seasons at Arsenal, notching 32 goals in 126 appearances before spells with Watford and Brighton.
Nigerian Duo Move to Serie A
In related news, Nigeria midfielder Ebenezer Akinsanmiro has joined Serie A club Monza on loan from Inter Milan. The agreement includes an obligation to buy if certain conditions are met. Monza confirmed the transfer in an official statement, highlighting Akinsanmiro’s journey from Remo Stars in Lagos to Inter’s youth setup, his Serie A debut against Lecce in February 2024, and subsequent loan spells at Sampdoria and Pisa.
The 21‑year‑old, who earned his first senior cap for Nigeria in a friendly against Egypt in December 2025, will now look to establish himself with Monza in Italy’s top flight.
Akpoguma Completes Free Transfer to Frosinone
Super Eagles defender Kevin Akpoguma has completed a free transfer to Serie A side Frosinone after leaving Bundesliga club Hoffenheim. The 31‑year‑old centre‑back signed a two‑year contract that runs until June 2028, ending a 13‑year stint with Hoffenheim where he made 175 Bundesliga appearances.
Born in Germany, Akpoguma represented the nation at youth level before switching his international allegiance to Nigeria in 2020. He has so far earned eight caps for the Super Eagles and will be playing outside Germany for the first time in his professional career.
