Tottenham Secure Club-Record £100m Deal for Sandro Tonali
Tottenham Hotspur are set to break their transfer record for the second time this week after agreeing a deal worth up to £100 million with Newcastle United for Italy international midfielder Sandro Tonali. The package includes an initial £92.5 million plus £7.5 million in performance‑related add-ons, eclipsing the £85 million agreement completed earlier this week for West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes.
Manager Roberto de Zerbi has long admired Tonali, first identifying him as a target during his time at Sassuolo when the player was starring in Serie A. Despite interest from Manchester City and Arsenal — neither of whom submitted a formal bid — Spurs moved quickly to secure the 26‑year‑old’s services.
Tonali joined Newcastle from AC Milan in July 2023 for £55 million. His first season in England was interrupted by a 10‑month suspension from the Italian Football Federation for breaching betting regulations. He returned to play a pivotal role in Newcastle’s Carabao Cup triumph in 2025, ending the club’s 70‑year wait for a major domestic trophy, and helped the Magpies qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
With Tonali’s departure on the horizon, Newcastle are already planning for life after the Italian. The club are reported to have made encouraging progress in their pursuit of Hoffenheim’s 20‑year‑old Ivory Coast winger Bazoumana Toure, as they continue their rebuild following Anthony Gordon’s £69.3 million move to Barcelona.
