Sunday Oliseh Says Pressure, Not Tactics, Led to South Africa’s Loss vs Mexico in 2026 World Cup Opener
Former Super Eagles midfielder Sunday Oliseh has pointed to nerves, not strategy, as the reason behind South Africa’s 2‑0 defeat to Mexico in the opening game of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking on his podcast after the match, Oliseh described the atmosphere at Estadio Azteca as a psychological battle that overwhelmed the Bafana Bafana.
“Finally, the World Cup is here,” Oliseh said. “80,000 fans at the Azteca, a beautiful opening ceremony and we all expected a romantic replay of the 2010 tournament in South Africa.
“But what we actually witnessed was absolute psychological warfare. Mexico won 2‑0, but this wasn’t about tactics. It was about pure pressure. South Africa didn’t lose because they are a poor side. Believe me. They lost because the stage seemed simply too big for them.”
Meanwhile, South Africa defender Ime Okon urged his teammates to put the setback behind them and focus on the next fixture.
“It was a tough game, we had them at times. We just look forward, we’re positive. We know it’s a loss but we’re looking to the next game now,” Okon told SportyTV after the match.
Coach Hugo Broos and his squad will now turn their attention to a crucial second‑group match against the Czech Republic at Atlanta Stadium on Thursday, June 18.
