A Nigerian man who paid ₦4 million for a three-bedroom flat uncovered a troubling issue just over a week after moving in. In a post on his X account (@SirTochi28), he explained that before making the payment he had checked water supply, electricity, location and other essentials.

He Reveals the Shocking Find
On the eighth day, he noticed that whenever electricity was restored, his unit was being bypassed. After informing the rental agent, he was directed to the landlord, who advised him to top up the prepaid meter. Further investigation showed an outstanding electricity bill exceeding ₦500,000, meaning that until the debt is settled, only half of the power he purchases actually reaches his apartment.
Online Reactions
Reactions followed. Prince Daniel commented, “This is really sad; that’s why I avoid prepaid meters altogether.” Oreofe wrote, “This shows why transparency is crucial when house hunting—landlords should disclose any unpaid utility bills before a tenant moves in.” Creative Yuha stressed, “This situation happens far too often, and it’s incredibly frustrating.” MummyIjay added, “When looking for a new place, always verify that previous tenants weren’t involved in meter bypassing; such details are often concealed.”
